UPLIFTING SOUTH AFRICA THROUGH SPORT ONE CHILD AT A TIME
Gender Equality Monthly Theme
Cha Inn Moon - February 27, 2014
The month of February has been dedicated to supporting the global movement for gender equality and women empowerment.
After a series of weekly training sessions that involved activities promoting self-confidence and awareness in the respective topics, the Football Foundation dedicated one day in educating and nurturing the children on their importance further.
11 boys and girls from the hockey programme in Gansbaai were led to a game of netball and a discussion period thereafter. At first, the boys were doubtful of playing netball due the sport’s social perceptions of being a female-dominated game. Hockey Coach Shereen Van De Merwe and Netball Coach Anchelle Damon guided the children by explaining the neutrality of the sport and that there were no barriers when it came to including any gender in sports.
The children recognized this idea well and were extremely engaged as they participated in a fun round of netball. After the match, everyone sat down to voice their opinions on gender and equality and was later reminded of the need to press onto equal opportunities throughout their lifetime.
We believe that reaching out to these 11 special children enabled us to grow new seeds of hope and change for the community and that the role of women in particular prosper as more boys and girls participate in an unbiased and liberated world of sports and life.
