Life Skills & Educational Programmes
Hout Bay Skills Programme
Leading sport and fitness college Exercise Teachers Academy (eta) created the Hout Bay Skills Training Programme in partnership with the Football Foundation of South Africa (FFSA), City of Cape Town, and Hout Bay Sport and Recreation Council to provide professional expertise on basic coaching skills, fitness, recreation, community development, event planning, resource mobilization, work readiness skills and administration.
This part-time five month accredited (NQF 5) bursary programme, which runs from February – June 2014 every Friday from 09:00 – 15:30, enhances expert knowledge and training for students that will become future Activity Implementers bringing about powerful change in their communities through sports and recreation.
Food for Sport - GreenBox
Food for Sport is a new and exciting initiative by the Football Foundation in collaboration with the Grootbos Foundation. The idea to introduce a food production program, and link it with the sport activities, was born as the sports facilitators was alarmed to learn the largely unhealthy and monotonous nature of many of the youth and children’s diet as well as generally low energy levels.
The mission is to increase the general health, nutrition, food security, and environmental awareness amongst young people, as well as develop a wide range of social and academic skills through organic food production and sport.
Dibanisa
The award winning Dibanisa Environmental Programme is an exciting 7-8 week educational initiative that aims to foster a love of the environment. Twenty children aged 11-13 from one school are selected each term (we rotate schools) and are given the opportunity to participate in Friday educational excursions that combine soccer games/lessons about nature/environment as well as a practical learning experience or exposure to a new place. Lessons include: Beach Cleanup, visit to Grootbos Green Futures, visit to the Great White House (shark/whale building in Kleinbaai) and many others. The end of the term overnight Dibanisa Camp is often a highlight for the kids and the volunteers.
Skillz GRS HIV/AIDS
Skillz GRS is an education programme designed by the Grassroot Soccer (GRS) organization and uses soccer to teach children about HIV/AIDS. Each FFSA Coach is qualified to lead this 9 week curriculum to learners aged 11–16 (different programmes for different age groups). The lessons take place in the school classrooms and the outdoor games can be adjusted to sports other than soccer.
In 2014, we may offer Skillz GRS to schools in Gansbaai, Stanford, and Hermanus.
